Do Good Things Better: Coffee and Culture Festival

Brand identity, venue photography and paid social for Do Good Things Better, a one-day coffee and culture festival held inside a church on Broadway in Sydney.

The brief

Do Good Things Better was FBR's coffee and culture festival, held on Saturday 31 August 2024 at St Barnabas on Broadway, the Anglican church locals call Barneys, or Cyberchurch. Local roasters including Diggy Doos, Stitch and Headlands ran coffee stalls and cuppings alongside sets from Eora's groove and garage DJs, with an afterparty at Club 77. All proceeds went towards coffee engineering research.

The festival brought FBR's three audiences, coffee, tech and music, into one room. A rave in a church is an unusual pitch, so the job was to make it read as a must-attend event rather than a novelty.

What I did

  • Brand identity. Created the festival's identity and the visual system used across every touchpoint.
  • Venue photography. Photographed the church to show people the space before they arrived.
  • Paid social. Produced the promotional media that ran as Meta ads, and managed the ad strategy and spend.
  • Guerrilla marketing. Designed the festival poster and wheatpasted it around the city myself.
  • Ticketing. Built and managed the event's ticket pages.
01Live event camcorder footage and video editing.
Halftone festival poster headlined "Coffee changed its chronotype", showing a figure in a hazmat suit holding a QR-code mug for 31.08.24, then the same poster wheatpasted in rows around a street pole, then a black and white lineup poster listing the coffee exhibitors and DJs.
02Guerrilla marketing: a flyer I designed, then wheatpasted around the city.
Dithered black and white photos of the church, one captioned "Hosted at the 'Cyberchurch' in Sydney's CBD... because we can", the other a view over the pews noting that proceeds go towards FBR's research into reducing waste in the coffee industry.
03Venue marketing.
Night photos of St Barnabas on Broadway, its modern facade marked by a huge illuminated cross, seen through bare tree branches, from the forecourt, and looking up at the building.
04Venue photography.
Dithered black and white social graphics, one headed "The Coffee" listing the phase one exhibitors, and three headed "The Culture" with the DJ setlist from 8pm to midnight, artist portraits and the Club 77 afterparty.
05Agenda graphics announcing the night's coffee exhibitors and DJ set times.
Four dithered story posts, each a grid of repeating portrait tiles around the word "Featuring" and a DJ's name with their set time, from Au4r33y at 8pm to Obeido at 11pm.
06Artist reveal and set times story posts.
Two black and white ad panels for a ticket-buyer giveaway, a Pesado set with a clump crusher and milk jugs, and an Artisan Barista set with a kettle and scale.
07Giveaway marketing ads.
